We’re lucky to be part of a cycling community that consistently shows up for causes that matter. This year, we were proud to support the Mater Foundation through the Bingo Boom Box fundraiser, an event dedicated to raising funds for cancer research at Mater.
Bingo Boom Box is an annual event hosted by long-time Smiddy community members Sam Wood and Steve Bardsley, supporting cancer research through Mater Uncancer Smiddy. This year’s event raised $8,000, directly funding vital cancer research and patient services at Mater.
Sam and Steve are also dedicated Challenge riders who have been part of the Smiddy community for many years. Together, they have raised more than $100,000 for cancer research, reflecting a long-standing commitment to the cause and a deep personal connection to its mission.
This year marks a significant milestone for Smiling for Smiddy, celebrating 20 years of supporting cutting-edge cancer research at Mater. Established in memory of Adam Smiddy, who passed away from an aggressive melanoma at the age of 26, Smiling for Smiddy brings together cyclists, triathletes, and their wider support networks to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
Since the first Smiling for Smiddy cycle challenge in 2006, the community has raised more than $13 million to support research with national and international impact. These funds help advance research into melanoma, prostate, breast, ovarian, and other cancers, with the goal of improving outcomes and developing more effective treatments.
We’re grateful to be able to support organizations like the Mater Foundation and the Smiddy community, who continue to turn passion for sport into meaningful progress. Thank you to everyone involved in Bingo Boom Box for the work you do and the difference you make.
